Tancredo----Term limits, Aliens, and Highways oh My

This is a post I have been putting off. I do not like to attack fellow Republicans as a general rule. However, when someone is leading the conservative movement to destruction it is time to say a few things. Plus Tancredo has no problem attacking fellow Republicans.

Tancredo Background
Tancredo comes from fairly recent immigrant stock. As George Will Points out:Around 1900, at age 11 or so, Tom Tancredo's grandfather, an orphan, sailed, unaccompanied, from Italy to New York with a note pinned to his shirt, asking that he be directed to Iowa. In Manhattan he was told that, the ocean being in one direction, Iowa must be in the other direction, so he began to work his way west. More than two years later, having rather overshot Iowa, he arrived in Denver. Eight decades later he recalled seeing the Rocky Mountains and thinking, "If Iowa is past that , the hell with it." One cannot help but note the irony, that a man that has benefited from a Country that allowed those dark skinned Southern Europeans in ,now is associated with groups that are obsessed with the "brown skin" folks. Anyway, Tancredo was a high school teacher and later a member of the Colorado House. However his rise up the political ladder to Congress should be examined. It tells us a good bit about Tancredo.

Tancredo and Term Limits
The district that Tancredo Represents takes in the suburbs of Denver. For those that have watched the movie Apollo 13, this is the district that astronaut Jack Swigert was elected too but died before he could be sworn in. . Tancredo largely became known state wide as the head of the term limit movement in Colorado. This of course was when "term Limits' was the issue that the Republic would rise or fall over. Tancredo not only advocated term limits but was former Chairman of the Colorado Term limit coalition. He rose to power on that issue. He then proceeded to break his pledge. The Denver Post in a Editorial states
"Need further proof that Coloradans were sold a bill of goods in the 1990s? One of those who was doing the promising about getting rid of "entrenched" fat-cat politicians was Tom Tancredo, then chairman of the Colorado Term Limits Coalition. He's now better known as an "entrenched" Washington politician who broke his own non- binding term limits pledge and shows no signs of voluntarily leaving the perks of congressional life behind. (Tancredo's flagrant disregard for his own term-limits pledge would have been our only argument left to actually support mandatory term limits, but the Supreme Court overturned the efforts of Colorado and other states to limit congressional terms.)
"Term limits will change the entire picture of politics in America," Tancredo said in 1994.
Indeed, it has. But not for the best
. "

Now I am no fan of term limits and it must be pointed out that many have broken that pledge. However, may I suggest there is a difference between lets say Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas who broke her campaign promise and a man such as Tancredo who was a major force in the debate itself. A issue that is largely responsible for his election and that he used to gain power. I suggest put the terms "term limits" and "Tancredo" into goggle. There are pages dealing with this issue. But here are just some highlights from Slate .

" 'We want to reinvigorate the electoral process by introducing people into the system who think of government service as a temporary endeavor, not as a career,' said Tom Tancredo, head of the Colorado Term Limit Coalition."
—"As More States Push Term Limits, Congress Wades in Nervously," by John King of the Associated Press, Aug. 2, 1994

"Tancredo was a leader of the term limits movement and has pledged to stick to the three terms that Colorado voters tried to impose on congressional representatives in 1994. We don't expect him to start backpedaling like Rep. Scott McInnis."
—"Tancredo in the Sixth," a Rocky Mountain News editorial endorsing Tancredo's first bid for Congress, Oct. 17, 1998

"Rep. Tom Tancredo apologized to his former allies in the national term limits movement on Thursday but said he's sticking by his decision to walk away from his pledge.
" 'I am sorry I let them down because I did,' Tancredo said in a conference call with reporters.

'And I would feel the same way if I were them.' Âs Tancredo braced himself for a barrage of criticism over his decision because he once led Colorado's term limits movement.
"He says the national term limits movement has faded since its heyday in the mid-1990s. 'I think my decision here, it's like taking a little bit of air out of an already deflated balloon,' Tancredo said."
—"Tancredo Offers Allies Apology," by M.E. Sprengelmeyer, Rocky Mountain News, Sept. 27, 2002

Also here " Several years later, in a 2001 interview with the Rocky Mountain News, Tancredo again swore to keep his promise to the voters: "For me, the issue of giving one's word and promising to do something like this is more important than the rest of it... The overriding motivation for me today to adhere to the term limits pledge is that I made a pledge... I took the pledge. I will live up to the pledge. That's it. That's the overriding issue."
For more on this an other incredible quotes go this liberal site. Tancredo Watch .It might be liberal, but they document this and more quite well in their archives.

Why did he break his pledge. Well there was another threat to the Republic that took priority over non term limited politicos. That he said was illegal immigration. It was reported
"Tancredo explained that he needs to remain in Washington so that he can continue his push to greatly restrict US immigration policies. He is one of the harshest critics of President Bush on immigration matters, claiming that Bush allows a virtually unrestricted "open door" border policy. Tancredo told that AP that he now plans to stay in Congress "for as long as he feels useful."

Tancredo In Congress

Well, as is well known Tancredo has become the leading face for this movement. There is no need to reinvent the wheel here. His association with radical groups like FAIR and its Tanton spinoffs have been well documented. The Pink Flamingo has documented it quite well and is continuing to do it on another blog here as well. The Wall Street Journal and Roll Call have documented it. But there a few other issues I wish to press that you might not be aware of.

Tancredo, is a renegade in the GOP. He actively works against sitting Republicans through his PAC and through working with the assorted Tanton groups. The Past Majority Leader ,Tom Delay, had to try to reel him in. The Hill reported in June of 2004 (some copying errors in quote click on link for full Quote)
Taking a page out of the Gipper's political playbook, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) is reminding his colleagues of Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of a republicann.DeLay delivered that message during a recent private meeting with Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), who has gotten into hot water with a few of his colleagues for setting up a political action committee that has attacked them on immigration policies. Tancredo's PAC, Team America, is immersed in today's Utah Republican primary, backing Rep. Chris Cannon's (R) challenger, former state Rep. Matt ThrockmortonThe PAC also has plans to target Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) who is facing a primary challenge from state House Majority Whip Randy Graf. The immigration-reform group has targeted both politicians because they support lenient policies for illegal immigrants. DeLay's message: Play nice with your Republican colleagues or you're going to remain stuck in your lowly committee positions. The prospect of internecine warfare is becoming a growing concern among House Republicans. The subject came up for discussion at a recent meeting of the chamber's committee chairmen, which DeLay chairs weekly.

Tancredo created the PAC this spring but said he has severed his ties with it and has no influence over whom the organization campaigns against. ....The PAC would have greater leeway to do what it needed to do if I was not formally associated with it ......It's not my PAC, so I have no control over it. But the group's website raises questions about that assertion. For example, Tancredo is listed prominently and in several places on the site as the group's founding chairman. The group also solicits contributions in Tancredo's name. Âs Your contribution is critical to helping Congressman Tom Tancredo and Team America elect to Congress people with the courage to change our disastrous immigration and border policies, read a solicitation form. “Tom Tancredo can't do it alone, he needs your help right now — let him know you are willing to stand with him in this battle!”The site also urges volunteers to join “Tancredo's Troops.”“Listed below are several opportunities for all of our members to become personally involved in building our organization and helping Congressman Tom Tancredo, stated a volunteer enlistment form on the site. But Angela Bay Buchanan, the sister of former Reform Party presidential nominee Pat Buchanan and chairman of the group, said, "We still call it his PAC. He is the founder, so we use his name on the website."

That PAC is here by the way. As you can see its doesn't look like this PAC has distanced themselves from Tancredo as he said. IF you believe it has , I would like to sell you some hurricane proof land in New Orleans that will never flood-promise. As you will notice, this was two years ago when he went against Represenative Cannon of Utah. He is at it again by the way. As Called as Seen pointed out yesterday some of their tactics . Cannon is in the fight of his life right now. He too is trying to expose the anti life and racist agenda of those that are against him here. Tancredo and Bay Buchanan are out to get him again. Its 2004 all over again. This is one reason why President Bush has made the rare move of actually endorsing Cannon while he is still in the Republican primary against a Tancredo backed opponent.

Before we live this topic, it should be noted that Tancredo's friends at FAIR through its Immigration Lobby helped to defeat a Republican Senator.
In addition, FAIR's political action committee, the U.S. Immigration Reform PAC, routinely receives significant contributions from Tanton and his wife. FAIR's PAC has contributed more than a quarter-million dollars for and against candidates since 1999. In 2000, it spent more than $30,000 against Republican Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan, an Arab American, who lost that general election. Not surprisingly, it has also given Representative Tancredo $15,000 over the years, according to Federal Election Commission documents.

Remember, when the Republicans lost effective control of the Senate in 2001 because of defection of Senator Jeffords of Vermont? Republican Senator Abraham was replaced by Democrat Deborah Ann Stabenow in 2000 . She won that race with 49 percent of the vote while Abrahams received 48 percent. However this probally did not phase Congressman Tancredo very much. Since he backed current minuteman leader Gilchrist, not a Republican by the way, over sitting Republican Congressman Issa from California.

This is as they say just the tip of the iceberg. He association with dubious groups all in his attempts to get his view of immigration law enacted is troubling. This is the man that very well might make a run to be come President of the United States and Leader of our Party.

The New Tancredo Issue

There is a new issue on the horizon. That is trade and globalism. It appears that Tancredo is slowly moving into advocating positions that is in a word crazed. During the past two weeks Tancredo has made joint appearances with Jerome Corsi on Corsi's latest theory. That is there is a secret plot by the Bush Administration to merge Canada, the United States, and Mexico into one economic and political enity. I know its laughable. but true. Some background on Corsi first.

Corsi of course is famous for being a co author his famous book on Kerry and the swift boat vets. To put it lightly things have gone down hill for him from there.

Jerome Corsi wrote his latest screed here at Human events but this is has been circulated widely through "conservative internet news groups'

"Quietly but systematically, the Bush Administration is advancing the plan to build a huge NAFTA Super Highway, four football-fields-wide, through the heart of the U.S. along Interstate 35, from the Mexican border at Laredo, Tex., to the Canadian border north of Duluth, Minn.

First off I love has he says "quietly but systematically" how sinister. There is nothing quiet about this people have known about this for years.

"Once complete, the new road will allow containers from the Far East to enter the United States through the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas, bypassing the Longshoreman's Union in the process. The Mexican trucks, without the involvement of the Teamsters Union, will drive on what will be the nation's most modern highway straight into the heart of America. The Mexican trucks will cross border in FAST lanes, checked only electronically by the new “SENTRI” system. The first customs stop will be a Mexican customs office in Kansas City, their new Smart Port complex, a facility being built for Mexico at a cost of $3 million to the U.S. taxpayers in Kansas City. "

Wait, I thought this was some secret plan. It appears that this not a secret to the folks of Kansas City. By the way Corsi is incorrect here, the Kansas City City Govt has given a 3 million dollar loan to be paid back over 10 years. It was not any sort of gift. Also Corsi does note that this organization has a web site in Kansas city. Again not a way to keep a secret.

The details of the NAFTA Super Highway are hidden in plan view. Still, Bush has not given speeches to bring the NAFTA Super Highway plans to the full attention of the American public. Missing in the move toward creating a North American Union is the robust public debate that preceded the decision to form the European Union. All this may be for calculated political reasons on the part of the Bush Administration.

Hidden in plain view?

It goes on and on. He has written several other articles on this point that try to make a conspiracy of some Trilateral Government in the making. It should be noted that Mr Corsi because of his wackiness has even been banned from posting on the very conservative Forum Free Republic. Here other articles on this topic can be found here and here and here What Corsi does is mix truth, half truths, distortions, scary conspiracy talk all to create this fiction. Corsi by the way is a regular on the George Noory show , which is the former Art Bell show. For those familar with this late night show, you know that this talkshow focuses on UFO's, mediums, mysterious contrails, astral projection, and we find the writings of Corsi.

From the Jan 12 2006 show In promoting his wacko book on oil the show states "Corsi's position: Oil is not "fossil fuel" but rather an "abiotic" substance that is naturally replenished on a constant basis. The so-called scarcity is a tact taken by the oil companies in order to increase their profits."

Good grief, Corsi is telling us that oil is a natural recurring resource that is brought up to the earth surface by force of the earth's rotation. I am not going to even try to engage that quackery. Mr Corsi appeared again on the Noory show on the 23rd of January right after Gary Schwartz, Ph.D., a professor at the Univ. of Arizona, who presented evidence that certain mediums who claim to communicate with the departed are yielding accurate information. After that and before the remote viewing segment ,Mr Corsi again illuminate the World on the big conspiracy regarding oil.

Now, his North American Union theory is getting play on this show. In fact, Patrick Heron who was on the show to inform us , that The Bible actually gives the name of "Apollo" as the person who goes on to become the Antichrist, and also spoke about the Nephilim, "spirit men" whom he suggested are "probably" behind the UFO abduction syndrome had to wait a whole hour so Corsi could give his North American Union Conspiracy theory.

What does this Kookiness have to do with Tancredo?

Corsi, Tancredo on Liddy show Challenging White House's unauthorized work on 'North American union'

Author Jerome Corsi and Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., will be guests tomorrow on
G. Gordon Liddy's radio show to discuss the White House's effort to implement a trilateral agreement with Mexico and Canada that could lead to a North American union, despite having no authorization from Congress.
Corsi and Tancredo will join Liddy for the entire 11 a.m. hour, Eastern time, and take calls from listeners.
Corsi reported this week that Bush administration working groups have not disclosed the results of their work despite two years of massive effort within the executive branches of the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

THE NEW WORLD DISORDER-Tancredo confronts 'super-state' effort Demands full disclosure of White House work with Mexico, Canada

Responding to a
WorldNetDaily report, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is demanding the Bush administration fully disclose the activities of an office implementing a trilateral agreement with Mexico and Canada that apparently could lead to a North American union, despite having no authorization from Congress.
As WND reported, the White House has established working groups, under the North American Free Trade Agreement office in the Department of Commerce, to implement the
Security and Prosperity Partnership, or SPP, signed by President Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox and then-Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin in Waco, Texas, March 23, 2005.
The groups, however, have no authorization from Congress and have not disclosed the results of their work despite two years of massive effort within the executive branches of the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
Tancredo wants to know the membership of the SPP groups along with their various trilateral memoranda of understanding and other agreements reached with counterparts in Mexico and Canada.
Tancredo's decision has been endorsed by Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project.
"It's time for the Bush administration to come clean," Gilchrist told WND. "If President Bush's agenda is to establish a new North American union government to supersede the sovereignty of the United States, then the president has an obligation to tell this to the American people directly. The American public has a right to know."
Geri Word, who heads the SPP office, told WND the work had not been disclosed because, "We did not want to get the contact people of the working groups distracted by calls from the public."
WND can find no specific congressional legislation authorizing the SPP working groups nor any congressional committees taking charge of oversight.
Many SPP working groups appear to be working toward achieving specific objectives as defined by a
May 2005 Council on Foreign Relations task force report, which presented a blueprint for expanding the SPP agreement into a North American union that would merge the U.S., Canada and Mexico into a new governmental form

Well thank God Gilchrist endorses it. Folks this stuff is all over these anti immigration forums and other conservative forums. Tancredo is now associating with conspiracy people that spend hours talking about events such as the recent Bildenberg meeting. Why is the GOP afraid of him? Tancredo is either going to make the GOP look liked crazed fools or he will cause some sort of loony fringe to have some voice. These are the people that largely are phoning congress with these anti illegal immigration talking points.

Great post. One minor correction: The astronaut was Jack Swigert, not Sweeney.

Oh thanks I knew I should have double checked that but it was getting time to cook supper. Its another ironic fact. That district loses a hero that might have been serving still today and gets Tancredo in return

Hey... are Lutherans allowed to participate around here? Consider yourself infiltrated ; )

I swear, before this Immigration Crusade is over I may become a Reconquista Catholic Democrat. That's how much I loathe and am disgusted with the pathetic state of affairs. Tom Tancredo - a leader in the GOP? Tommy Term Limits - the festering boil that won't dry up and blow away?

Thank you so much for speaking up and providing info to do whatever I can to fight this kook. Yeah, I'm gonna follow Tommy the backstabber's example and break the 11th commandment... with relish. Only in this case it really is a matter of grave national security. This dude is a menace to society and especially to the GOP. Time to expose the cretin for who and what he is.
